Make the Chai Spice Blend
Make the French Toast Batter
In a large shallow bowl, add the cornstarch, baking powder, nutritional yeast and Chai Spice Blend. Whisk together and add 2 tbsp of the soy milk.
Mix well to dissolve the cornstarch and then slowly whisk in the remaining soy milk. Doing it this way will prevent lumps in the batter!
Next add the orange juice orange zest and vanilla extract and stir to combine.
Cook
Place a large skillet on the stove and set to medium heat. Add 2 tbsp of vegan butter and while it melts, soak one or two slices of bread in the batter for 20 seconds on each side.
Then place the bread in the warm pan and cook for 3 minutes on each side or until it easily releases from the pan. Flip and cook on the other side until golden brown. About 2 minutes.
How to get the perfect, golden brown crust without sticking: Flipping too soon, having the heat too high, and not having enough butter in the pan are the three reasons French toast can stick to the pan or not get crispy enough, so medium low and slow is the way to go!
How to keep the French toast warm: Place finished French toast in a 300 degree oven to stay warm while you repeat this process with the remaining bread and batter.
